Your friend brought back to mind a book that I read a long time ago - Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann. I will read it again to look for parallels between Adrian Leverkühn and your friend Jose-Luis Cortes.

Richard,
You are correct. For a second when I wrote that response, I had a feeling that I might be misinterpreted...
Jose Luis will not agree with me, I guess...

In my own defence, I considered my work at an investment bank on Wall Street really sordid. I turned to art as a 'healer'. It has given me a lot of calm now...

Thank you for the clarification.

June, your comment is challenging and difficult to answer. First of all, the world and nature of prostitution in the gay world is very different than in the straight world. It's a topic for a long evening's conversation. Among other things, the stigma associated with prostitution is much more negative for heterosexuals than for homosexuals. Partly, I suppose, it stems from the same mentality that makes promiscous men " proud studs" but promiscous women "shameful sluts."

Sunil: Jose Luis would not agree with your use of the word sordid or servitude. For him this is sexually thrilling and energizing and very much life-affirming.

Steven: the artist mostly paints New York city scenes of places where he has played out his fantasies. I don't think the represent a different side of Jose Luis; I think it's more of a push pin in a map sort of thing: Jose Luis was here.

Richard,

Your storytelling skills are fabulous. Just as I was saying to myself "but what about art" -- you said, "This story is supposed to be about art and muses." It's a rare storyteller who has such a good sense of timing.

I'm interested in Sunil's comment, in part because I was thinking that if the prostitutes in the photo-montage were female, I would have been angry at the exploitation. But I sense nothing of that in your comments -- and it seems that Cortes' is exploiting as well as being exploited.

The paintings capture that wierd blue light of night in the city. And of course, the Lautrec connection is instant, in part because of the signage.

Richard,
Did Jose-Luis Cortes' paintings represent an escape from the sordid aspects of his work (perform/prostitute for people - which could be considered a form of servitude) whilst at the same time serve as a homage to the establishment that nurtured him? I am curious...
