Hat, oil on 12 x 16 inch basswood panel

Nancy, oil on 8 x 10 inch board

Ottercreek, oil on 12 x 12 inch board
The four paintings done from photographs taken in the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan, were intended as studies of sand. In Hat, an initially more realistically painted sand was overpainted with a gradient of titanium yellow.

very beautifull, hope to see them in real
Birgit:
Great! A new direction. The treatment of the sunbather is spot on. You have caught the sense of illumination very well. The bright skin against the black bra is nice. I do wonder if the blue portions might benefit from the same flat and matter-of-fact treatment that you gave the bra.
Jay and Hanneke,
Thanks. Someone else thought that the blue towel attracted too much attention. It may be more attention-seeking in the photograph than in the painting itself. I will check when I get back to Michigan. I like looking at the picture itself.
While doing the Hat was part of the fun here, to learn to draw faces, I went to Lyle Gertz‘ portrait class – very inspirational.
How splendid! Love the human figures, although the gully captures my heart.
June,
Today in Bonn, a musician, Wolfgang Heitmann, improvised a short piece of music for the ‘gully’. It was fun
There is another somewhat improvisational dance called the Hully Gully. It might be danced to Wolfgang Heitmann’s piece.
Jay,
Great news today. My Empire Bluff painting was accepted for a publication illustrating the work of Leelanau (NW Michigan) artists. The accepted painting is the green Empire bluff; http://birgitzipser.com/2012/10/sleeping-bear-dunes.
Next fall, we are planning an exhibition in Bonn where Wolfgang Heitmann will play his composition for my paintings, not taken too Bonn but only projected.
