Birgit,
Somehow this painting has both a tranquillity and a whirling energy about it. The latter seems due to the strong diagonals and the wind-blown cloud patterns. Having the one obvious sky cloud at the bottom–even though we know it’s a reflection–makes it seem the rest of the painting could be a vision floating in the air.
Thanks, Steve, that is the space that I want to be in ‘tranquil with lots of energy’.
Karl commenting once on one of my photographs talked about a reversed background. Perhaps, the reflecting blue sky is something like that?
It already has the “right” energy feeling to it – don’t change a thing!
Thank you, Nine Tomatoes. That is what I think too.
I love your Mandala for April 23th!
Birgit, I think the only thing left to do is pour a glass of wine to celebrate. Great work!
Thank you, David, for appreciating my baby steps.
Birgit:
What a remarkable painting! Personally, I might choose a white wine to go with it. I’m intrigued by your palette as it is light, but but has a lot of body. The overall flatness of the yellow restrains an otherwise strong forward projection of the boat, this pushing and pulling giving an extra emphasis to the boat person’s activity. The pole is in a position which might indicate effort, but whether the figure is propelling or restraining is unclear; this in keeping with a general sense of ambivalence. The only thing that tugs at me is that the face seems to be that of an actual person, and he or she is making eye contact. Will be there soon to row the viewer across
Can’t wait to see your next effort.
Jay,
You picked up on what I had been thinking about continuing to work on. I had meant to shine sunlight against the boat to make it more 3-D. But I will not do it now because my expertise may not be up to it.
You like the palette! It was inspired by a reproduction of Willem de Kooning’s Pastorale.
Birgit:
And because you may not need to.
Good choice.
Birgit,
There’s so much to look at and comment on in this painting — the diagonals across the horizontals (or vice-versa); the repetitions of shapes; the energy; the abstract quality of the representation (or vice-versa) — it’s captivating.
It’s an interesting painting Birgit, the boat is beautifully proportional and realistic designed making the whole painting very powerful! I love the yellow you have chosen!
Thanks, June and Angela, for your encouragement.
