This time of the year is special. Last spring I was taken by dappled light as it fell upon the house and the old fence. But that didn’t last as trees were felled and the fence was replaced by something smooth, implacable and untouched by time. But the setting sun remains to cast a languid glow over the kitchen table.
What is your favorite time of the year?
Jay,
All seasons have their charm for me. Today, I made my way to the beach to do my first pencil sketch. Luckily, I finished before the wind started feeling too cold.
The sunny but cool morning made for solitude at Lake Michigan. Later, this summer, I may sketch children playing in the sand.
Beautiful photograph!
Birgit:
We’ll be in the Traverse City area over Memorial Day weekend, visiting with possible in-laws. Good if the weather holds.
Favorite season is whatever it is until, not far from the end, I start wanting it to be the next one. Spring is nice, but I’m almost ready for summer…
Here in Los Angeles we only have two seasons, Summer A and Summer B. They’re basically the same, though Summer A is a bit hotter and smoggier. Can’t say I have a favorite.
Spring/summer in Portland is astonishing — fulgent, overwhelmingly green, attacking low states vengefully.
The words I use may be related to the fact that late spring/early summer apparently exacerbates a chronic condition that I have and lays me up for a month or two. At my age I can’t afford to lose a month — although no one asked my permission. So like Wordsworth, I see but do not feel how beautiful it is.
More to the point, Jay, I too love dappled light, but have always felt that Ma Nature did it better than anything I could approximate, even with the camera. Your photo, Jay, is more interesting for its composition than for its light for me — although I will grant you that separating the two is difficult. What strange and wonderful shapes those shadows make. And the color which appears only at the top — the rest being shades of neutral — not spring as it appears here in Portland, but a specific, human-built construction.
