Sunil Gangadharan, ‘The United States of Adipose’, Sumi ink on 400 series watercolor paper, 11″ X 14″
There was not much to write about today. These drawings are some of my recent ones. Nothing serendipitous, (if Steve were curious), but a slow burn and thrill involved in teasing ink using a bamboo pen over the creases and crevices of highly textured paper.

i really like the one at the top!
Sunil:
Who posed for your Adipose? The texture is appropriate and I can feel a sense of suffocation in the bulges and folds.
Sunil,
The Unites of adipose is an eye-catcher. At first look, I thought that it may be based on a section of adipose tissue from your wife’s belongings.
Whom does the bright cell stand for that is so dramatically engorging itself with fat?
Sunil, You keep revealing new and fascinating facets! The first drawing makes me think of Leonard Nimoy’s photographs of obese women. I love your marking style; are the lines literally tracings of paper texture? Have you ever seen that before? I find the style and the composition itself quite compelling.
All:
My apologies, but I am heisting this post to announce that the Spencer Finch character, who I mentioned in a piece about MassMOCA, is on the cover of Art In America. We return you to your comments in progress.
Rupert, Birgit and Jay,
The drawing is based off photos of large people by Martha Casanave.
Steve,
I tried to use the texture of the paper to a large extent. I did study Suerat at close quarters at the MoMA last week and I must confess I was trying to imitate him.
I know about Mr. Nimoy’s photos.
Prescience, Jay
