Celebrating a promising event in my life by posting still another painting of South Manitou, freshly retouched. Same format as before.
Birgit:
By golly I like this painting. It has a very nice, balanced quality. I understand too that this may be a last treatment of the motif as you are moving from that neck of Michigan. Retirement I assume.
Jay,
Thanks,
And, quite the contrary, ‘that neck of Michigan’ will be my base. As my husband still works in Manhattan, I will enjoy spending the winter months in the city to learn about ‘art’. But to make our place ‘up North’ our homestead, I will get to spend more than half a year there walking along the beach with the Manitou islands out in the Great Lake.
From Wikipedia: ‘Manitou is a term used to designate spirit beings among many Algonquian groups. It refers to the concept of one aspect of the interconnection and balance of nature/life’. And then there is the hope of some Nirvana in the ‘Buddhist context: to the blowing out of the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion’.
But perhaps, my dream will have to be postponed a little. To popularize one of my scientific children, I did submit a two year grant proposal. In the unlikely event that it will be funded, I will continue doing glycobiology as professor emeritus. The promising event, mentioned above, means that it looks as if I have a buyer for my downstate house.
Birgit:
“Professor Emeritus” has a nice sound. And it appears that you folks have it well figured out. A lot of people head south for the winter you know.
Jay,
I am learning Italian using the Rosetta Stone. If the snow should get to us, we ‘ll spend some winter time in Italy studying Botticelli – Studienreise.
Birgit:
The Rosetta Stone? I thought that was ancient Egyptian and Greek.
Or maybe there’s a flip side to the stone that we don’t hear about.
Jay,
The newer version of the Rosetta Stone, even though pricey, is probably cheaper than the ancient version.
Off to Germany tomorrow to celebrate the holidays with my mother under the cloudy sky of Northern Germany.
